High Performance Computing (HPC)
The Departments of Biology and Chemistry oversee ECU’s High Performance Computing Centers. Educational and research accounts are available to qualified faculty, staff and students within the 16 campuses of the University of North Carolina System.
Options for Research and Educational Computing
The Department of Chemistry maintains a Zeus – SGI Origin 350 and a Dell cluster with 16 nodes, 20 cores per node (320 cores plus an additional 32 cores on the head/login node), 2670 Intel V2 processors, 128 GB/node memory, 1 TB local disk, 180 TB total raw storage (including disk array), NFS connectivity, Intel and Portland compilers, Intel MKL and MPI libraries, PBS Torque batch scheduling software, all running on RedHat Linux OS.
The Department of Biology maintains two HPC machines to facilitate and improve research in bioinformatics, large-scale ecosystem analysis, spatial statistics and phylogenetic analysis. The HPC core consists of an IBM BladeCenter server and a Dell PowerEdge R910 Server providing parallel computing capacity and scalable infrastructure with standard x86 server technologies.
Please note that the SGI Altix 4700 (Jasta) and the SGI Prism (Coffee) have been decommissioned effective June 1, 2016.
Zeus – SGI Origin 350
East Carolina University’s SGI Origin 350 (Zeus). This system has hardware and software solutions specifically optimized for complex technical research computing tasks. This system includes 32 800Mhz MIPS R16000 cpus with 32Gb of memory and 1.2Tb of storage.
Mercury Dell Xeon Cluster
The newest addition to the suite of systems is the Mercury cluster. It is made up of 320 Xeon E5-2670 processors with 2.0 Tb of memory and 130Tb of shared storage. This system is managed by the Bright Cluster Manager suite and PBS Torque scheduler.
